A study of the effectiveness of interdisciplinary medical care for combatants with PTSD

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to establish the nature of the dependence of the effectiveness of interdisciplinary medical care on the age of the combatant and the time the combatant spent in the combat zone. We hypothesized that the severity of PTSD (decrease in PTSD scores, anxiety, aggressiveness and hopelessness) depends on age and time spent in the combat zone. The highest average rate of PTSD is observed in the group of combatants who spent a relatively short amount of time in the combat zone — up to 6 months. All combatants received comprehensive medical care, which included combined pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy (according to clinical recommendations). Each combatant underwent 16 sessions of cognitive-behavioral therapy twice a week, and testing (Mississippi Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Scale; A. Beck Anxiety Scale; L. G. Pochebut's Aggression Measure; Beck Hopelessness Scale). As a result, it was found that medical care is effective: after 8 weeks, the severity of symptoms decreases, which significantly interfere with the social adaptation of the combatant; however, in the group of 30—40 years old, the positive dynamics are relatively less pronounced. It can be assumed that in this age period participation in SVO is most traumatic.
