Abstract. Relevance: Adolescents are the most vulnerable to internet-addictive behaviour due to the age-specific personality’s immaturity and its unstable structure. Goal of research: studying individually-psychological qualities of adolescents with internet-addictive behaviour and discovering psychological risk-factors for development of internet-addictive behaviour. Materials and methods: The participants of the full-design random study were 1084 adolescents, among them 436 females (40,2%) and 648 males (59,8%). The mean age in the sample was 15,56 (SD=0,81 years). In accordance with the criteria of forming study groups, three groups were allocated: internet-addict group, internet-abusing group and control group. Clinical psychological and experimental psychological methods were used. Clinical psychological method included semi-structured psychological interview. The participant's questionnaire (V.L. Malygin, K. Feklisov, Е.А. Smirnova, N.S. Khomeriki) was developed to assess internet-addictive behaviour parameters. Experimental psychological method is represented by the following methods and techniques: 1) Chen Internet Addiction Scale-CIAS Test adapted by K. Feklisov, V.L. Malygin; 2) Kettel Questionnaire (HSPQ); 3) S.I. Podmazin Modified Pathocharacterological Quesstionnaire (MPDQ); 4) Gilford Social Intelligence Study Method (adapted by E.S. Mikhailova). Results: The research showed that 4,25% out of 1084 adolescents (the mean age in the sample is 15,56) were diagnosed as internet-addicts, while 29,33% as internet-abusing. Individually-psychological qualities of adolescents with internet-addictive behaviour are distinct by reduced self-control and volition, in particular, by increased impulsiveness and overactivity to weak inciting stimuli. They are characterised by anxiety, distractibility, insufficient attention concentration, difficulty with self-control over both one’s behaviour and emotions, proneness to affective reacting and increased personality frustration. Characterological peculiarities of internet-addictive adolescents are revealed by the increased profile in all types, except hyperthymic, which suggests that the development of internet-addiction is associated rather with intensity of maladaptive personality traits than specific characterological peculiarities. Conspicuous is the fact that social competence of internet-addictive adolescents is significantly lower than that of control group adolescents. Emotional intelligence as a system of skills to identify and understand emotions as well as to use them to increase the communication effectiveness is also significantly reduced in the adolescents with internet-addictive behaviour. Increased excitability, reduced self-control, emotional instability, high level of anxiety, proneness to introversion as well as poorly developed social and emotional intelligence are the most significant individually-psychological risk-factors of internet-addiction in adolescents.

Key words: internet-addiction; internet-addictive behaviour in adolescents; psychological risk-factors; individually-psychological traits; character qualities.

Introduction

It is impossible to imagine modern society without high technology, in particular, without the Internet. Internet is a powerful environmental factor that influences on the formation of the personality of modern teenagers [23; 34]. Children and adolescents are the most active group in the Internet. However, they are particularly vulnerable to all sorts of negative effects due to the immaturity and instability of personality structure [4; 7; 26; 29]. Overuse of the Internet in this age often leads to impaired social adaptation: conflicts in the family and at school, problems with friends, general immaturity [1; 13; 33]. Appeal of activity on the Internet for teenagers is caused by a number of opportunities which are given by Cyberspace: 1) the opportunity to have own intimate world where there is no access to anybody, except the teenager; 2) the opportunity to avoid responsibility for the events; 3) the opportunity to feel realness of processes and completely ignore the outside world; 4) the opportunity to correct any error by repeated attempts; 5) the opportunity to make any decisions independently (for example, within game activity); 6) decrease in risks of communication [1]. The Internet environment itself is very multifaceted and flexible space which can be formed differently due to the most attractive activities in the Network.

The question of identification of individual psychological prerequisites for the formation of dependent behavior of the substance was widely studied. Researchers sought to reveal and describe "dependent type of the personality" [5; 6; 10].

Studies to identify the specific  type of personality of internet-addicts conducted rather recently. The first attempts to identify personality traits associated with Internet-dependent behavior, were implemented in 1998 by K. Young, R.C. Rodgers [34].

The following personality traits different researchers have linked to the internet-dependent behavior: schizoid tendencies [12], introversion and loneliness [30], aggression and hostility [14; 19; 28; 30], search for thrills [14; 19; 24] , decrease in self-control and narcissistic personality traits [28; 31; 32], low self-esteem [2], neuroticism [28; 32], low emotional intelligence [18; 25], low self-efficacy in real life compared to the high self-efficacy in virtual life.

Researchers R.F. Teperik, M.A. Zhukova revealed connection of Internet addiction with alexithymia and the level of empathic abilities [13]. A.Y. Egorov notes the low self-esteem and symptoms of depression among Internet addicts [3; 21]. O.V. Litvinenko, V.Y. Rybnikov, V.A. Yurenkova connect computer gaming addiction with a high level of situational anxiety, high mental stress, the total deviation from the autogenic norm, as well as a decrease in working capacity and vegetative coefficient [8; 9].

Despite the undeniable theoretical and practical importance of these studies, the work that have been carried in the early stages of the development of the problem of Internet addiction are exposed to comprehensive criticism. This is due to the lack of a common diagnostic approach and use of internally uncoordinated polling techniques.

So, for example, J.B. Gray, N.D. Gray [18] reported that IAD test K. Young, which has been the only diagnostic tool for a long time used by researchers to define Internet addiction was not enough valid, and its internal consistency estimates rarely reaches an acceptable Cronbach's alpha. Among other weaknesses of the conducted researches are following: studies were based only on volunteer’s results, the lack of control groups, the small size of the samples [1; 15; 17].

The aim of the research is studying of individual psychological characteristics of adolescents with Internet-dependent behavior.

Materials and Methods

The sample comprised 1084 adolescents with 436 females (40,2%) and 648 males (59,8%). Participants for this study were high school students recruited from 6 high schools of Moscow and the Moscow region. The mean age was 15,5 (SD = 0,81) years. The criterion for inclusion of examinees in the study was the fact of having home access to the Internet.

According to the criteria of formation of research groups, three groups were created: group of Internet-dependent, group abusing the Internet, control group.

Group of Internet addicts consisted of 46 adolescents (4,25% of the total sample, 25 of them are boys (54,3%) and 21 female (45,7%). Average age of the adolescents: 15,7 ± 0,87. Average experience of Internet usage 4,7 ± 2,9 years. average time per day spent in the Web 6,32 ± 2,31 hours per week 38,65 ± 15,6 hours.

Group abusing the Internet consisted of 318 adolescents (29,33% of the total sample), 185 of them are boys (55%) and 133 girls (45%). The average age of the adolescents: 15,53 ± 0,81. The experience of Internet usage 4,77 ± 2,13 years. Average time per day spent in the web 3,89 ± 2,26 hours per week 24,26 ± 15,41 hours.

The control group consisted of 105 adolescents. 54 boys of them are boys (51,43%) and 51 girls (48,57%). The average age of the adolescents: 15,66 ± 0,75. The average experience of Internet usage 4,4 ± 2,127 years. Average time per day spent in the web 1,92 ± 0,953 hours per week 11,89 ± 7,54 hours.

The following methods were used to implement the goals and objectives of the study: clinico-psychological and experimental-psychological methods. Clinico-psychological method included semi-structured psychological interview. Questionnaire for participants of the study (V.L. Malygin, K. Feklisov, E.A. Smirnova, N.S. Khomeriki) was developed to estimate the parameters of Internet-dependent behavior. Experimental-psychological method contained the following methods and techniques:

•  The Chen Internet addiction Scale-CIAS test (adaptation K.Feklisov, V.L. Malygin);

•  High School Personality Questionnaire HSPQ (R.B. Cattell) to describe personal structure in terms of individual traits and dispositions;

•  The modified pathocharacterological questionnaire (MPDO) Podmazin S.I. — to investigate the types of character accentuations and types of psychopathy;

•  Test of social intelligence Guildford (adaptation E.S. Mikhailova).

The study of individual psychological characteristics of Internet-addicted adolescents revealed that in the group of adolescents with severe problems of Internet usage there were statistically significant differences in terms of excitability-balance — a factor D (p = 0,014; p < 0,05) and ability of self-management and organization — Q3 factor (p = 0,046; p < 0,05) (HSPQ, Cattell).

That was possible to identify differences of "general frustration-relaxation" — factor Q4 (p = 0,066) at the level of tendencies (Table 1). So, Internet-addicted adolescents are characterized by greater impulsiveness, overreaction on weak provoking stimuli in comparison with control group. They are characterized by restlessness, distractibility, poor concentration, as well as the difficulties of self-control of behavior and emotions. Adolescents with Internet addiction tend to be anxious, tend to be in a constant state of tension. Their emotional state can be described as unstable, with a prevalence of low mood.

Table 1

Individual psychological characteristics of adolescents according to
the questionnaire Cattell HSPQ

The comparative analysis of indicators of accentuations of the personality (MPDO test) in groups of Internet-addicts and adolescents of control group revealed that there were statistically significant higher rates for all types of accentuation (except hyperthymic type) in the group of the internet-addicted adolescents (Table 2).

Therefore, the increase of personal traits those tends to level of accentuations (the severity of maladaptive traits) is a factor associated with the formation of the Internet-dependent behavior.

Table 2

Average rate of accentuated traits of Internet-addicted adolescents
(questionnaire MPDO)

The qualitative analysis of MPDO test’s results allowed to plan specific nature of internet-addicted personal profile (Table 3). According the rules of calculation results, adolescents with accentuated traits were identified in each group. Results are presented in percentage in Table 3.

Table 3

The prevalence of accentuated traits among the Internet addicts
(questionnaire MPDO)

Thereby, internet-addicted adolescents are irritable, prone to affective outbursts. They may look pale, weakened, which is amplified by the fact that this group of teenagers spends significantly more time with the computer than adolescents from the control group. It is difficult for them to establish informal, emotional contacts — this inability is often hard to experience. The fast exhaustion in contacts leads to a further withdrawal. Lack of intuition manifests the inability to understand other people's feelings, to understand the underlying context. Internet-dependent adolescents have difficulties in self-control and self-regulation. These skills are especially important in the planning of effective activity in the Internet, because it is necessary to resist to the hyper-stimulating Internet environment.

It is noteworthy that in 48,11% of the adolescents in the control group characterological traits did not reach the level of accentuation, while, as among Internet addicts adolescents accented character traits identified.

It is remarkable that personal traits of 48,11% adolescents from the control group did not reach the level of accentuations whereas accentuated traits were identified in 84% of cases among the adolescents of the internet-addicted group. That gives us reason to believe that the formation of Internet addiction has less to do with specificity of personality profile, compared with the severity of maladaptive personality traits.

It's remarkable that characterologic traits of 48,11% teenagers in the control group don't reach the level of accent character while among Internet dependent teenagers accent character are identified in 84% of cases. It can be assumed that formation of Internet dependence is associated not only with specific characterologic features, but with the severity of non-adaptive personal traits.

The comparative analysis of emotional intelligence in both groups (internet depended and control) revealed statistically significant distinctions on the following indicators: General integrated indicator of emotional intelligence (p = 0,0042), Section A "Measurement of Perception, Persons" (p = 0,002), Section E "Measurement of Perception, Pictures" (p = 0,02). Distinctions on Section D scales "Managing of the emotions" and the Section H "Managing of emotions of other People" are also close to statistical reliability (to p = 0,08 and 0,05 respectively) (Table 4).

Table 4

Overall MSCEIT scores

Thus, the obtained data allow to claim that Internet dependent teenagers have lower indicators of emotional intelligence in comparison with teenagers of control group. Sometimes they can't identify their emotions, have difficulties in emotional self-organization and emotional contact with other people. The basic factor in hierarchical structure of emotional intelligence is the ability to identify emotions. Thus the violation of this factor can cause disruption of ability to manage emotions and reduce emotional competence.

The research of social intelligence of Internet-addicted teenagers, as a set of abilities that determine the success of communication and social adaptation, as well as regulate cognitive processes associated with the reflection of social objects, revealed a statistically significant decrease of "General indicators of social intelligence" and indicators subtest "Verbal expression" in the experimental group (Table 5).

Table 5

Overall Guilford's Test of Social Intelligence scores

Thus, we can say that in general Internet-dependent adolescents have difficulties in understanding and predicting human behavior, and do not recognize the difference between meanings of the same verbal messages in various context of communication situation and relationships. These results are apparently associated with the specifics of Internet communicative activity, which is primarily characterized by lack of non-verbal communication. So in the Internet we loose whole layer of meta-communication that is associated with the expression, sensitivity to the verbal intonation, and ability to discern the hidden meaning of the message.

The correlation analysis revealed that the rate of Internet addiction statistically significantly positively correlate with indicators of the Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire R. Cattel (Figure 1): with emotional instability (factor C), shyness in behavior and interpersonal relationships (factor H), low capacity for self-control and organization (factor Q3), anxiety (factor D), guilt (factor O), with a total frustration (factor Q4).

Figure 1. Correlation of the components of Internet addiction and
personality traits (HSPQ)

Also, we found that the overall rate of Internet addiction statistically positively correlate with all types of accentuations (questionnaire MPDO), except hypertony (Table 4). The obtained results indicate that the risk of Internet addiction increases with growth of the intensity of character accentuation.

The study of the correlation of Internet addiction behavior and emotional intelligence (test MSCEIT) found a negative correlation of Internet addiction behavior with the ability to perceive, identify emotions and their expression (Section E; R = −0,319; p < 0,05), to understand and analyze feelings (Section G; R = −0,236; p < 0,05), also with the General index of emotional intelligence (R = −0,441; p < 0,05). Consequently, if an adolescent is more competent in the recognition, understanding and analyzing emotions (both ours and others), than his interpersonal relationships are better, and the indicators of Internet addiction are lower. Therefore we can assume that addicted adolescents use the Internet as a compensation of frustrated needs.

Discriminant analysis allowed us to assess the most informative features that determine the probability of getting into the group of Internet addicted or healthy adolescents (Table 6). As grouping factor (variable), we used factor of presence or absence of Internet-dependent behavior. Factors by Cattel`s questioner, accentuations (MPDO), the sub tests according to the method of Guildford and indicators of emotional intelligence (38) were considered as independent variables. Informative signs was assessed by F-Fisher test.

The results of discriminant analysis showed that it`s necessary to assess 8 signs: subtest 4, the factor G, the figures of introverted type of accentuation, the factor E, the factor O, subtest 1, the factor Q4, the factor D to determine the probability of getting teenager in a group of Internet-dependent or healthy adolescents.

Table 6

Significant inclusion criteria for groups of adolescents with Internet addiction
and healthy adolescents

Important parameters for the determination of contact with a group of Internet-dependent or healthy adolescents. In the analysis were obtained coefficients of discriminant functions: the table shows that the largest contribution in formation of Internet addiction bring the level of introversion, normative behavior (factor G) and the ability to recognize patterns of interpersonal situations in dynamics (subtest 4).

Table 7

Coefficients of classical discriminant function

Thus, the high level of introversion, the impaired ability to recognize patterns of social situations and low normative behavior of the adolescent causes a greater probability of getting in Internet-dependent group.

Discussion of research results

Thus our research has revealed that adolescents with Internet-dependent behavior are characterized by reduced regulatory-volitional sphere, in particular, increased impulsivity and over-activity on low-provoking stimulus. For them are anxiety, inattention, lack of concentration, difficulty of self-control over their behavior and their emotions, the tendency to affective response, and increased personal frustration. The indicator of social competence in the Internet-dependent group is significantly lower than in the control group. Emotional intelligence is also significantly reduced in adolescents with Internet-dependent behavior, which impedes the creation of close interpersonal relationships, and contributes to compensatory use of Internet. The most important individual psychological risk factors for Internet addiction in adolescents are increased anxiety, reduced self-control, emotional instability, tendency to introversion, and insufficient development of social and emotional intelligence.
