Abstract

This article takes up the conception of Russian psychotherapy historical museum and preconditions of founding this museum and placing it into the structure of Russian historical and ethnographical museum in Torzhok. Also it describes in details the procedure of starting new project in the interface between psychology, psychotherapy, pedagogy and culture by the start-up technology. As the location of the new museum exhibition the Dolgoruky mansion located in Torzhok on Novogorodskaya embankment was proposed. Full title: House of the Duke-Magnetiser. Museum of the History of the Russian psychotherapy.

Metaphor: A tree as a symbol of the history of the Russian psychotherapy. We proposed the color range for halls on the basis of principles of positive dynamic psychotherapy (PDP).

In the framework of PDP the model of “Personality” is based on the psychology of attitudes by V.N. Myasishchev. There are three main clusters of attitudes.

1. The cluster “attitude towards oneself” is analyzed by means of the model of “Identification”, and the guiding principle here is the principle of “Dynamics”. The dynamics are shown in red, the color of fire, the color of blood. In terms of the tree symbol the “Dynamics” principle is most relevant to the root system. For the history of the Russian psychotherapy development such a root system (the basis of identity) may be the image of the Dude-Magnetizer A.V. Dolgoruky, the first official therapist in Russia. The central exhibit of the hall dedicated to Dolgorukov, might be his family tree.

2. The cluster — “a person's attitude towards the world of things and events” is analyzed by means of the “Harmony” model. The guiding principle here is the principle of "Harmony" which is displayed in yellow, the color of the sun. In relation to the tree symbol the principle of "Harmony" correspond to the trunk. The trunk corresponds to the entire history of the Russian school of psychotherapy. The central exhibit of the hall dedicated to the history of the Russian psychotherapy might be the Tree of schools and directions of the Russian psychotherapy.

3. The cluster "attitude towards other people or relationships”. This cluster is analyzed by means of the "Temper" model and the guiding principle here is the principle of "Hope" which corresponds to blue — the color of a clear sky — or green. The principle of "Hope" is expressed to the greatest extent by branches, leaves and fruits. The central exhibit of the hall dedicated to ethnography in psychotherapy may be the Tree of temper reflecting the essence of the methodology of child-parent psychotherapy called "The tree of temper" developed by V.Y. Slabinsky.

Key words: history of psychotherapy; history of clinical psychology; museum; psychological tourism; St. Petersburg school of psychotherapy.

According to many therapists’ opinion, voiced by E.G. Eidemiller, "Psychotherapy has become an independent interdisciplinary speciality. It has integrated such kinds of human activity as religion, philosophy, medicine, psychology, education, ethics, arts, politics" [27]. Unfortunately, the interdisciplinary nature of psychotherapy has a negative impact on its scientific understanding. Suffice it to mention that such an important aspect as the history of psychotherapy has long been in the shadow of other sciences in the Russian scientific literature. For instance, in medicine, the bulk of research was focused on the history of psychiatry [2; 3; 4; 5; 9; 25; 26; 29], in which psychotherapy was viewed as an auxiliary branch of psychiatry [2; 3; 4]. In works on the history of psychology [6; 30], psychotherapy was also mentioned only fragmentarily in the context of psychological views development [2; 3; 4].

In the historical context, the situation basically formed in 1872 as a result of the legendary dispute between psychologist Konstantin Dmitrievich Kavelin (1818—1975) and physiologist Ivan Mikhailovich Sechenov (1829—1905). Kavelin used the same method as Wundt when describing the thoughts and feelings of the creators of culture in terms of empirical psychology. When he was writing his book "The Tasks of Psychology" he relied on the extensive factual material about the character, mental abilities, family relationships, religious beliefs and behavior peculiarities of the Russian people, accumulated in the archives of the Russian Geographical Society. It is worth mentioning that the material was collected under the direction of Nikolai Ivanovich Nadezhdin (1804—1856), who headed the imperial study program on psychology and ethnography of the Russian people. It was the largest scientific study of the time. For a few decades thousands of employees of the Russian Geographical Society as well as volunteers (teachers, civil servants, doctors, landholders, priests) had been following the same single pattern wherever, "there’s Rus’ in the air". The accumulated material was so unique that such prominent Western psychologists as Georg Wundt and Herbert Spencer expressed their regret about the inability to work in the archives of the Russian Geographical Society. Later Kavelin’s approach was supported by Georgy Ivanovich Chelpanov (1862—1936), who suggested to reform psychology by turning from its physiological and experimental direction to the cultural and historical (ethnic) one [30]. However at that time (in the early twentieth century) the dispute of psychologists and physiologists was won by the latter, which set the paradigm of psychiatry and psychology development for years to come.

It is also important to note that classic works on the history of psychiatry and psychology of the Soviet era were written under the undoubted influence of Marxism, which is why the history of psychotherapy is considered mainly through the prism of historical materialism and Marxist political economy. Despite the fact that these studies clearly contain some unique scientific material, a wide range of their provisions needs to be re-thought. The situation is complicated by the fact that the rejection of the ideology as a surrogate methodology lead to a methodological vacuum. It is no coincidence that B.D. Karvasarsky made somewhat of a "step back" in his studies and focused his efforts as well as the efforts of his disciples on the individuals who had greatly contributed to the development of psychotherapy [17; 18], thus leaving wider scientific generalizations to others.

Scientific knowledge in the history of any discipline is not limited to the description of a particular person’s biography and events of the past. It presupposes a conceptual and theoretical understanding of these facts. Psychotherapy is no exception, as without a multilateral historical analysis of the road already travelled it is impossible to predict the further development of Russian psychotherapy [2]. In our opinion, studying the development of psychotherapy through the prism of birth and formation of scientific schools as well as dialogue between them is an undoubtedly important direction [21; 24]. Etkind’s monograph "Eros of the Impossible. The History of Psychoanalysis in Russia" [28] is a striking example of this approach. It shows the complicated process of rooting of psychoanalysis in the Russian soil, with all the complexity of conflict dialogues with other Russian psychotherapeutic approaches and schools. Considering the birth of Russian psychoanalysis in a broad cultural context, where doctors and psychologists as well as prominent figures of Russian culture of the Silver Age are regarded as relevant participants of the process is another strong point of this book. The contribution of creative intellectuals to psychiatry, psychology and psychotherapy is shown by I.E. Sirotkina in her study "Classics and Psychiatrists" [20].

The new material introduced into scientific circulation by the members of the А. Solzhenitsyn House of Russian Expatriate Community, studying the "contribution of the Russian scientific community to the world's scientific thought and the development of numerous scientific communities" is of great interest. By now, they have published 84 biograms of experts in the field of psychotherapy and psychology, who worked abroad in the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century [19]. Unfortunately, the majority of the people represented in the publication are mostly or completely unknown in modern Russia. It is important to emphasize that this study became possible only thanks to the emergence of the suitable establishment — the А. Solzhenitsyn House of Russian Expatriate Community.

At the present stage of development of cultural and educational space, it is a museum that can be the establishment where scientific studies are implemented.

As M.B. Piotrowski has rightly said, modern museums are changing, they differ much from their predecessors now, "The era of a multipolar world is taking the place of museum epochs of the imperial and "tourist" globalism. It creates conditions for new searches in the museum business as well as for huge new challenges." Museums are turning from entertainment facilities into scientific centers both conducting independent researches and providing their funds for independent researchers [16].

L.A. Markina states that modern museums are becoming a part of the system of scientific research institutions; their activities are largely composed of specialized and museological studies. Scientific studies within the specialized sciences correspond to the areas of scientific research which are characteristic of the branches of science, whose source material is stored in museums. In this case we are talking about the researches that are relevant to the development of specialized disciplines [12].

On May 24, 2013 at the All-Russian Conference dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the All-Russian Historical and Ethnographic Museum, V.Y. Slabinsky made a report "Torzhok in the mirror of the Russian psychotherapy" [23]. In this lecture the reporter told for the first time about the intertwining destinies of the first Russian psychotherapist Duke Alexei Vladimirovich Dolgorukov (1813—1874 (?)) [7; 11; 23] and the author of the world's first positive psychotherapy Alexander Ivanovich Yarotsky (1866—1944) [1; 10; 21; 23; 31], who both lived in Torzhok at different times; he also suggested to found a Museum of History of the Russian psychotherapy as part of the All-Russian Historical and Ethnographic Museum.

The A.V. Dolgorukov’s mansion on Novgorodskaya embankment in Torzhok

The All-Russian Historical and Ethnographic Museum in the town of Torzhok, the Tver region, was established in 1988 on the initiative of Academician D.S. Likhachev in order to study, preserve and promote the Russian historical and cultural heritage. The result of the research activities of the All-Russian Historical and Ethnographic Museum was the arrangement of more than a dozen of archaeological and ethnographic expeditions, which allowed to collect a large and broadly unique material on the history, culture and everyday life of the Russian people. In recent years, the All-Russian Historical and Ethnographic Museum has been actively introducing new museum technologies, therefore it can rightly be called a museum of a new type. The "Russian Home" project, which is based on the metaphor of "The Souvereign’s Road" between St. Petersburg and Moscow, is one of the important projects of the All-Russian Historical and Ethnographic Museum [8].

After the idea of the Museum of History of the Russian psychotherapy had been supported by A.M. Mikhailov, the Director All-Russian Historical and Ethnographic Museum, we developed and began to implement the scientific concept of museum exhibition.

This work consisted of several stages.

At the first stage a list of peers was formed:

1. The Freud Museum (Vienna, Austria) [35].
2. The Freud Museum (London, England) [32].
3. The Freud Museum (Pribor, Czech Republic) [34].
4. The Freud Dream Museum (St. Petersburg, Russia) [14].
5. The Mendel Museum (Brno, Czech Republic) [33].
6. The Bekhterev Museum (St. Petersburg, Russia) [13].

The first five of the selected museums are both recognized and economically successful research institutions. Thus, the Freud's House Museum is one of the most visited museums in Vienna.

The Freud Museum in Vienna is located in a residential building on Berggasse Street, 19, in the apartment where Freud has lived for 47 years. The museum consists of several rooms, some of which were previously used by Freud’s family as their living space, and others served as the work space. The latter includes the waiting room, where Freud’s patients were waiting for their appointment, the reception hall and Sigmund Freud’s study. The psychoanalytic couch on which Freud conducted his therapy is the main exhibit of the museum. A copy of this couch is located in the London Freud Museum. The Vienna Freud Museum houses the Europe's largest library dedicated to the problems of psychoanalysis, which numbers 35 000 volumes. There are also some items from Sigmund Freud’s antique collection, his personal belongings and working equipment [35] in the museum.

The success of this project was so impressive that similar museums were established in other countries as well. At the moment, there are four Freud Museums currently open — in Vienna (Austria) [35], in London (UK) [32], in Pribor (Czech Republic) [34], and in St. Petersburg (Russia) [14]. With the exception of that of St. Petersburg, all the mentioned museums carry out quite an extensive scientific work aimed at the preservation and development of the psychoanalytic heritage. Suffice it to mention that such interesting and important research projects, as "Psychoanalysis, monotheism and morality: The Sygmund Freud Museum Symposia 2009—2011" (Müller-Funk W., Scholz-Strasser I., Westerink H., 2013) and "Assertiveness among market participants — a psychological study of investors’ behavior" (Oberlechne T., Osloer C., 2007) [35] are implemented in Vienna. In addition, all the four museums represent complexes of a new type that are home to the most advanced museum technologies, in particular, to cultural projects (exhibitions, presentations, and lectures), which attract the interest of charitable foundations and help to collect sponsor funds needed to conduct scientific researches.

The experience of the St. Petersburg Freud Dream Museum seems quite interesting. This museum was created as an affiliated organization of the East European Institute of Psychoanalysis (EEIP) and has a very limited set of authentic exposition material. The main emphasis is laid on the creation of a cultural space — organization of exhibitions, performances and presentations, which both makes the Freud Dream Museum one of the iconic museums of St. Petersburg and contributes significantly to the popularization of psychoanalysis in Russia [14].

The Mendel Museum (Museum of Genetics) located in the city of Brno (Czech Republic) in the Old Brno Monastery (Augustinian Abbey of St. Thomas) is equally interesting. Gregor Johann Mendel, the founder of modern genetics, was the abbot of the Old Brno Monastery. Today, the Mendel museum is both a frequented museum and a major educational center. Experts from many European universities give lectures and seminars in the lecture halls of the museum [33]. Thus, one of the authors of the article was lucky enough to give training seminars on the premises of the museum twice — in 2004 and 2006. The vegetable beds where Mendel grew colored peas, which enabled him to discover the laws of inheritance, and the DNA model constructed manually by Crick and Watson, are the main exhibits of the museum. They attract a lot of tourists. Besides, the Mendel Museum houses Gregor Mendel’s manuscripts, documents and drawings. In addition, there are various tools there, such as an old microscope and other instruments that were used by the scholar in his work [Ibid].

Unfortunately, it is the Bekhterev Museum affiliated with the St. Petersburg V.M. Bekhterev Research Psychoneurological Institute that is the most rarely visited and obscure of all the selected museums in terms of cultural and social life. There is very little information about this museum on the Internet. It is almost inaccessible to the general public. Besides, there are no interactive technologies used [13]. Consequently, despite the relatively large number of unique authentic exhibits, the Bekhterev Museum is little known even to specialists.

At the second stage of conception development, the program context of the Museum of History of the Russian Psychotherapy was found.

On October 11—12, 2013 the authors participated in the St. Petersburg Cultural and Tourism Forum. President of the Forum, Deputy Minister of Culture of Russia Alla Manilova, introduced a new program of development for Russian museums. The four new mega-projects (four pillars of the national museum policy) were introduced to the scientific community:

1.   "The Silver Necklace of Russia". Purpose of the project: Integrating historical monuments of the Northwest Russia into a single cultural and tourist area. Speaker: Professor Anatoly Kirpichnikov, Head of the Slavic and Finnish Archaeology Department, Institute of History of Material Culture.

2.   "Encyclopedia of Russian Regions". Purpose of the project: to create a single web portal for regional encyclopedias with the prospect of developing an analogue of the Great Soviet Encyclopedia on its basis. Speaker: Alexander Kobak, Executive Director of the D.S. Likhachev International Charitable Foundation.

3.   "The Great Silk Road". Purpose of the project: The scientific rationale for a new approach to the interpretation of the cultural heritage of the Russian Regions. Speaker: Vladimir Grusman, Director of the Russian Museum of Ethnography.

4.   "Russian Manors". Purpose of the project: Restoration of Russian spirituality and traditions. Russian manor as a center of scientific, educational and cultural life of Russia. Speakers: Vladimir Tolstoy, the President's Advisor for Culture and Ekaterina Tolstaya, director of the State Memorial and Natural Preserve Museum-estate of Leo Tolstoy "Yasnaya Polyana".

After consultations at the St. Petersburg Cultural Tourism Forum, we have chosen the "Russian manor" project as a program context for the concept of Museum of History of the Russian Psychotherapy, and the Ilya Repin Estate Museum "Penates" as a model sample [15].

The Ilya Repin Estate Museum "Penates" is located 45 kilometers away from St. Petersburg, on the shore of the Gulf of Finland. The estate is famous for the following fact: it was here that Ilya Repin (1844—1930) spent the last 30 years of his life and was buried. The estate became one of the first memorial museums in our country under the auspices of the Russian Academy of Arts. In the "Penates" you can see some personal belongings of the artist, his paintings and drawings, works of his son Yuri and other Russian artists. The "Penates" has a collection of about six hundred paintings and drawings. In the artist’s house the memorial appearance of rooms is preserved. They bear the imprint of the host’s tastes and habits: the workshop, the dining room, the study, the sun-parlour. Visiting the museum includes getting acquainted with the exhibition, viewing of an old newsreel depicting I.E. Repin in his house and a tour of the Memorial Park and the surrounding area, which inspired many Russian artists and writers. It is worth mentioning that there is a number of objects in the Memorial Park, each of which has its own museum legend. All the objects are integrated into various interactive museum programs. The Ilya Repin Estate Museum "Penates" is a major scientific center — a branch of the Research Museum of the Russian Academy of Arts [Ibid].

The third stage — presentation and discussion of the scientific concept of the Museum of History of the Russian Psychotherapy at the All-Russian Historical and Ethnographic Museum — was held on February 21, 2014. We proposed a long-term plan to develop the idea: structure, exhibits, interactive programs, events, scientific work.

The fourth stage is the beginning of implementation of the concept and pilot activities.

While the scientific concept of the Museum of History of the Russian Psychotherapy was being developed the Duke A.V. Dolgorukov Mansion was being reconstructed. We proposed the color range for halls No. 1, No. 2, and No. 3 according to dynamic psychotherapy (PDP) principles.

L.A. Markina writes that in recent decades the acquisition of a museum collection has often been associated with the conduct of socio-psychological researches aimed at studying the characteristics of the process of thinking and perception in the specific conditions of a museum. The purpose of such researches is to arrange the museum space and programs, taking into account the psychological impact of the museum and its architectural design on a modern person. Such studies are conducted both at the preliminary stage (when selecting the subjects) and as a part of already formed collection [12].

The model of "Personality" in PDP method is based on the V.N. Myasishchev psychology of attitudes. There are three main clusters of attitudes: attitude toward oneself, person’s attitude toward the world of things and events, and attitude towards other people or relationships.

The first cluster of relationships ("attitude toward oneself") is analyzed by means of the "Identification" model, with the "Dynamics" principle being the guiding one. On the symbolic level, the dynamics is shown in red — the color of fire and blood. The conflict in this area is called a basic conflict. The identity is the foundation for further development; it is a role model, which specifies the vector of development [22]. The "Dynamics" principle is the most relevant to the root system in terms of the tree symbols. The image of the Duke-Magnetizer A.V. Dolgorukov, the first official psychotherapist in Russia, can be such a root system (the basis of identity) for the history of the Russian psychotherapy development. His family tree can become the central exhibit of the hall dedicated to Dolgorukov.

The second cluster — "a person's attitude toward the world of things and events" is analyzed by means of the "Harmony" model. Violation of attitudes is classified as a current conflict. The guiding principle here is the principle of "Harmony." On the symbolic level the Harmony" principle is displayed in yellow, the color of the sun [Ibid]. The "Harmony" principle corresponds to the trunk in terms of tree symbols. A tree’s trunk is its frame. Without roots, there would be no trunk. Only with a good basis (roots — the "Identity" model), there is a possibility for a further development. As for the establishment of the museum exhibition "The House of the Duke-magnetizer. The Museum of the History of the Russian psychotherapy", the entire history of the Russian school of psychotherapy corresponds to the trunk. Different schools and directions evolve and become stronger and bigger in the institutional and theoretical terms, and together they represent the metaphor of a growing and thickening tree trunk. Tree of schools and directions in the Russian psychotherapy can become the central exhibit of the hall, dedicated to the history of the Russian psychotherapy.

The third cluster of relations is "attitude towards other people or relationships". The conflict, which is manifested in the cluster and called a key conflict, is analyzed by means of the "Temper" model with the "Hope" principle being the guiding one. In symbolic level the "Hope" principle corresponds to either blue (which is associated with a clear sky and calm sea) or green color [Ibid]. With respect to the tree symbols, the "Hope" principle is expressed to the greatest extent by branches, leaves and fruits. It is the hope that the Russian psychotherapy will continue to grow and bear fruit to people. The Tree of temper, reflecting the essence of the V.Y. Slabinsky method of child-parent psychotherapy "The Tree of Temper", which allows people to develop the traits they need for successful personal fulfillment in life, can become the central exhibit of the hall dedicated to ethnography in psychotherapy [Ibid].

On May 17, 2014, a private presentation of the Museum of History of the Russian psychotherapy was held for the participants of the "Spring School of Psychotherapy and Training Guild" in Tver. On the same day within the framework of the international project "The Night of Museums", the authors of the concept conducted two master-classes "The Sixth Sense. Develop your intuition": 1) for specialists; 2) for non-specialists. In August 2014 on the premises of the Museum of History of the Russian Psychotherapy, a 3-day workshop on Gestalt therapy (organized by the Guild of Psychotherapy and Training) was held.

In conclusion, it should be noted that an old debate initiated by Kavelin and Sechenov [30] has been actualized in the new stage of development of science, which is confirmed by diametrically different approaches of the representatives of psychological and medical professional community to the Psychotherapy Act [17; 27]. Each of these communities has prepared its own version of the bill and submitted it to the State Duma. Currently, there is quite a heated discussion about what kind of approach to psychotherapy — medical or psychological — is more scientifically-developed and useful to society. While each of the parties adduces its argument and the last quietus to the argument is not given, we would like to quote M.B. Piotrovski: "A museum is an important element in the dialogue of cultures, being its field of dialogue, its mechanism and its regulator. The museum can and should smooth out conflicts. The museum produces tangible and reliable material on genuine things to the public. These things are not so much to persuade as to stimulate thinking about the "controversial" and potentially conflicting issues. Dialogues may be very critical, but they are an excellent tool for studying the subject" [16].

We believe that the establishment of a specialized institution, the Museum of History of the Russian Psychotherapy, will play a positive role in resolving the above mentioned problems and will give a new impetus to the study of the history of psychotherapy in the context of the synthesis of the history of clinical (medical) psychology and psychiatry.
